About Me

My name is Kyle Smith and I am studying abroad for my senior year in Aydin, Turkey through the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange Student (YES) scholarship program. The K-L YES scholarship sends 65 American high school students to countries with significant Muslim populations. The program was started in the aftermath of 9/11 to foster relationships between Muslim countries and the United States. This blog will act as a bridge between me and those back home.

I'm from a rural community about 30 minutes outside of Louisville, Kentucky. Some extracurricular activates I participate in include I'm on my schools American football and track team, I'm an active member in my schools Future Farmers of America chapter and have been involved in Boy Scout since I was in elementary school. Some hobbies of mine include fishing, hunting and working on the family farm.

I decided to study abroad after my Spanish teacher told me about YES abroad in the fall of 2013. Prior to YES, I participated in an intensive Arabic language coarse sponsored by the NSA, ever since I've had great interest in Muslim and middle eastern culture so YES was the perfect program for me.

YES abroad is an excellent program and I encourage anyone interested in studying abroad to look into this program.
